International
Students

 Change to Spanish

BEFORE COMING TO SPAIN:

International students who are neither residents nor nationals of European Union States, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, must apply for a study visa for a period equal to the duration of the programme to which they are applying according to the following guideline:

For stays not exceeding six months, the study visa will be the document authorising the stay in Spain. The study visa will be requested by the student him/herself at the corresponding Spanish Consulate or Embassy.

When the stay is longer than six months, it is necessary, in addition to the student visa, that the student applies in Spain, within one month of effective entry into Spain, for the student card (officially Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) in accordance with Article 39 of RD 557/2011, of 20 April.

To obtain the address of the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in the country of origin, as well as detailed information on the procedure and documentary requirements, it is recommended that you visit the website of the corresponding Consulate or Embassy.

The Embassy or Consulate will indicate the necessary documentation for the correct processing of the visa. Although the approximate waiting time for the resolution of the study visa varies between four and six weeks, it is recommended to start with the procedures at least two months before the start of the programme so that the international student can start his or her classes on time.

If the student is already legally in Spain, he/she can apply for a student visa without having to return to his/her country of origin as long as he/she has at least 30 days before the end of his/her legal status.

Students are considered to be in a legal situation in Spain if they have entered with a tourist visa or have entered without a visa for a maximum period of 90 days. In these cases, in order to continue legally in Spain, the student must apply for an authorisation to stay for studies or a student card in Spain for the period of study of each academic year, without prejudice to the need for subsequent renewal.

Below is a list of the requirements and documentation necessary to obtain a visa and/or authorisation to stay for studies for a period of more than six months:

Passport valid for at least the period for which the stay is requested (this must be provided by the student).
Documentation accrediting sufficient financial means (to be provided by the student).
Letter of admission from the educational centre. This is issued by CES Felipe Moreno-Nebrija once the student has paid the full amount of prescription and tuition fees.
The letter of admission includes information about the programme, start and end dates, number of hours and syllabus.

Criminal record certificate (to be provided by the student if he/she is of legal age).
Medical certificate certifying that you do not suffer from diseases with public health repercussions.
In the case of minors, authorisation from parents or guardians.
Payment of the fee for processing the procedure.
Private medical insurance with repatriation expenses (to be provided and paid for by the student).

ONCE IN SPAIN...

If the international student is a national or resident of a European Union country, he/she will obtain the NIE number when applying for registration in the Register of EU citizens.
If the international student is a national of a country outside the European Union, the NIE number will be included on their foreigner's identity card.

Once in Spain, international students with a visa for a study stay of more than 180 days have a period of one month from their entry to apply for the foreigner's identity card.

Once in Spain, international students with a visa for a study stay of more than 180 days have a period of one month from the date of entry to apply for a foreigner's identity card. This card replaces the student visa issued in the country of origin, allows the student to travel through the member countries of the Schengen Agreement without the need for a visa and provides a legal basis for the student's stay in Spain. Until you have the student card, it is not advisable to leave Spain, as international students may find it difficult to re-enter.

Documentation and Process

To apply for a student card:

. More than 180 days: you must request an appointment for fingerprinting on the website. Click here

. Students who are legally in Spain (tourist visa or legal entry without a visa): the application can be submitted online or at any of the registries of the administrative bodies or branches of the Post Office. The documentation to be submitted is the same as that required to obtain the student card, together with form EX-00.

. European Union citizens: you must request an appointment for the EU citizen registration certificate procedure on the website. Click here

In addition to the documents required for each type of application, they are also regularly requested:

. Certificate of census registration.
. Two passport-size photographs.

The period of validity of the residence permit may be limited to the duration of the studies, research or training, and at the end of this period it may be renewed if certain requirements are met.

In any case, for the renewal of the authorisation to stay for studies, it is necessary to present a certificate from the centre where the studies are being carried out that accredits that the degree has been obtained, the fulfilment of the requirements for the continuation of the studies or a favourable report on the development of the research or training.
